Lesson 5　「許可を得る」

お題：予算を立てていなかったソフトを買わないと、OSのアップグレード時にまずいことになる！上司、お願い、購入の許可を下さい！

なかなかの良いスタートを 1st draftでしたので、２回目の添削は満点を目指しましたが、どうしてもうまく表現できないところがあって、Garry先生に質問しました。

それは

現在のソフト、”Final Draft” では、２か月後の会社全体のOSアップグレードの時、対応していないため、使えなくなる。そこで、同じ機能を持ち、アップグレードのOSにも対応可能なPage-2-Printというソフトを買わないといけない。

１st draft では

“Page-2-Print” which is necessary to upgrade Windows 7.”

=「Windows 7　のアップグレードに、Page-2-Printが必要だ。」

としたつもりが、

「Windows7のアップグレードのために、Page -2-Printが必要だ」と解釈される。と指摘されました。違うのです、Windows7へのアップグレード時に、現在のソフトが使用できなくなるから、Windows 7対応可のPage-2-Printが必要なのです。

この微妙な表現の違いに、どう言い直してよいかわからず、to upgrade　か　for upgrading か、前置詞選びで自信がなかったのです。。。

しかし、問題は前置詞選びではありませんでした！

正解は

“when”を使うこと。➡なーんだ、上記の赤文字で、自分で書いているじゃないか！

アップグレード時に、って！

“Page-2-Print” which is necessary when upgrading Windows 7.”

なんか、こんな言い回しでtrapにはまったように困ってしまいました。

でも、これを正確に表現できるかできないか、で伝わる意味が違うので、大切です。な

なるほど?と思ったのでした。

Dear Rebecca,

I am e-mailing you today to ask your permission to purchase new design software, called “Page-2-Print” which is necessary for when upgrading to Windows 7.

Our company is planning to upgrade the our entire computers network to Windows 7 in two months; however, we’ve found out that the software our design department is currently  using, Final Draft , does not support the new Windows 7. Unfortunately, we were not aware of this problem when the company budget was planned.

In order to meet the upgrading timeline, we would like to buy a site license for new software, Page-2-Print, on 7 computers in our office. The total cost for this purchase will be $12,000. Page-2-Print can work exactly the same as the current software, Final Draft, and run on Windows 7,so there will be no problem at all replacing the software.

I am aware that this is an additional purchasing request and should have noticed this problem earlier; however, we need this new software to meet the company’s computer upgrading timeline. I also believe Page-2-Print will allow us to carry out our daily tasks smoothly and ease daily operations. Could you kindly give us a permission to proceed with this purchase?
